Welcome to Kelly Cumming's Website
Hi, my name is Kelly Cumming. In July 2003, when I was 15, I went to my doctor complaining of a pain in my shin (the doctors’ thought it was bruised blood after a kick or something – I used to play football for Westhill Girls FC). I was given an appointment with a consultant who one week later, on 1st August, told me I had cancer, a tumour (osteosarcoma) in my right lower part of my leg and six days later I was admitted to the Anchor Unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where I started a course of chemotherapy. I received three sets of chemotherapy, which lasted for 3-4 days each time before surgery on 16th October 2003, just after my 16th birthday, which was an above-knee amputation. I then received another three sets of chemotherapy, again 3-4 days each time and this finished on the 31st of December.
In 2004 the Kelly Cumming Trust was set up in order to help generate funds for the purchase of a cosmetic leg from Dorset Orthopaedic Clinic. Within a year £20,000 had been raised. The main sponsors were The Diced Cap Charitable Trust, Westhill Academy and Westhill Rotary and many more.
In 2005 I went down to Dorset Orthopaedic Clinic to purchase a Cosmetic leg and a Sports leg, which was immensely overwhelming.
Since then I have enjoyed an active life, going to the gym 3 times a week, enjoying going out with friends and going on holidays.
3 years on and I am now 21 and continuing to enjoy an active life. I am currently working a full-time at Technip UK Limited in Westhill as an HR Assistant, which I thoroughly enjoy. I graduated in December 2008 with a BA in Management which I was studying part-time.
Last year in March I undertook a major challenge consisting of a 5 day Trek round Cuba, this was very gruelling however very overwhelming once completed. This inspired me to set myself another challenge……... Next year I am hoping to run the New York Marathon!! Fingers crossed my training this year sets me up for applying next November, I’ll keep you posted! :o)
